Taylor + Kevin’s Pine Forest Engagement Session at Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland
There’s something really special about getting to photograph people you’ve known for years. Taylor and Kevin’s engagement session felt less like meeting clients and more like catching up with old friends in one of the dreamiest hidden spots in North Texas. I’ve had the chance to photograph Taylor’s family over the years — from her sister’s wedding to family sessions — so documenting this season for her and Kevin felt incredibly meaningful. The two of them are so effortlessly chill and laid back together, the kind of couple that makes being behind the camera feel easy.
Nestled inside Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland, the landscape feels unexpectedly transported from somewhere far beyond Texas. Tall golden grasses sway in the wind while towering pine trees stretch endlessly toward the sky, creating a quiet forest atmosphere that feels almost mountain-like. It’s one of those locations that instantly slows you down. The pine-covered trails and soft forest floor made the perfect backdrop for Taylor and Kevin’s engagement session — secluded, peaceful, and filled with that earthy kind of magic that makes you forget you’re only a short drive from DFW.
We met up on a chilly February afternoon after a stretch of gloomy weather had settled back over North Texas. The air was cold enough to make your fingertips sting a little, but somehow it only added to the mood of the day. The forest floor was completely blanketed in pine needles, crunching softly beneath our boots as we wandered through the trees looking for pockets of light and little hidden corners to explore.
Taylor and Kevin made the entire session feel effortless. They laughed easily together, stayed wrapped up close between shots, and fully embraced the slower pace of the afternoon. There was no rushing, no pressure — just the three of us wandering through the woods while the wind moved through the trees overhead.
For most of the session, the sky stayed heavy and overcast, giving everything that soft muted glow that photographers secretly love. Then, out of nowhere, the sun broke through the clouds for just a few brief moments. It filtered through the pine trees in the most magical way, lighting up the forest with warm golden light before disappearing again almost as quickly as it arrived. Those few minutes felt cinematic — the kind of fleeting light that makes you stop mid-sentence because you know you’re witnessing something special.
It honestly felt less like a session in Texas and more like we had escaped somewhere tucked away in the mountains for the afternoon.
